Beads of Courage

The Beads of Courage program supports children and teens with serious illnesses by helping them tell their stories of bravery through colorful beads. Each bead represents a significant moment in their treatment journey, such as a medical procedure or personal achievement. By collecting these beads, children can visualize their strength and resilience, aiding in reducing distress and promoting positive coping strategies.

Implemented in over 300 children's hospitals worldwide, the program empowers thousands of young patients daily. The simplicity of the beads' symbolism has a profound impact, providing comfort and encouragement.

Project details:

The Beads of Courage boxes are designed to hold the beads that children receive as they go through their treatment journey. Here are the key specifications:

  • Size: The boxes should be large enough to hold thousands of beads. For turned boxes, the recommended interior dimensions are a minimum of 5 inches in diameter and 4 inches in height, with a preferred size of 6 inches in diameter and 5 inches in height.

  • Stability: The base of the box should be wide enough to ensure stability and prevent tipping over easily.

  • Lid: The lid should be easy for small or ill children to remove or lift. Any finials should be simple and easy for a child to grasp.

  • Finish: The finishing of the boxes is crucial. They should be properly sealed to prevent harboring mold, germs, or infections. Avoid using finishes that take a long time to outgas, such as linseed oil.

  • Design: While all kinds of wood are beautiful, it's recommended to highlight the natural beauty of the wood with clear varnish, stain, or burning. Avoid painting the boxes.

  • Logo Beads: It's encouraged to include Beads of Courage logo beads on the boxes. These can be attached anywhere within or outside the box.  If you need one or a few beads, check with Burt Andrew.

These guidelines ensure that the boxes are safe, functional, and beautiful for the children who receive them. If you're interested in making and donating a box, you can find more detailed guidelines and instructions on the Beads of Courage website.

When/how to contribute:

  • Beads of Courage boxes may be brought to meetings or open shops at any time and delivered to Burt Andrew.  When an adequate number is collected, Burt will deliver them to a participating area health care facility.
