Freedom Pens

The Freedom Pen program started in 2004 by the Sgt Joe Kelly Freedom Pen Foundation as an all-volunteer initiative to provide custom hand-crafted pens to American servicemen and women. It is for anyone interested in donating their time, talent, and services in providing writing instruments for active-duty military personnel as a symbol of our support and care.

This year HCW has decided to include area veterans. Freedom pens will be turned at the Hunt County Fair as well as through the year by interested HCW members. Pens will be provided to current and former military service personnel at no charge, at the Fair, through the local military recruiting office, through the Greenville Veterans Administration Office, and elsewhere.

This program provides a way for us to show our support and appreciation to those who are currently serving our country as well for the sacrifices made by those who are no longer active.
Project details:
-
The turner is free to select the pen kit to use, and to determine the design, materials, and finish (turner pays for pen kits out of pocket).
-
However, as a (free) option: Slimline pen kits have been generously supplied to HCW for Freedom Pens by Rockler. These kits will be on-hand at the Fair and may also be obtained at other times by our members (max. 6 at a time) for this purpose from Tom Nehl.
-
Members are encouraged to use the patriotic red/white/blue center bands made previously by Club members, also available at the Fair and from Tom.
-
There are many sources of pen kits. A few:

When/how to contribute:
-
For pens not made and passed out during the Fair, they can be brought to meetings or open shops at any time and delivered to Lee Craft. As adequate numbers are collected, Lee will make them available to the appropriate military offices.
